New Delhi: The much-awaited discussion on Data Sovereignty, The Pursuit of Supremacy was held at Constitution Club, New Delhi. Mr. Vineet Goenka, co-author of the book and in-charge IT and Social Media – BJP Delhi Pradesh shared the journey of the book from its inception to the point where it has sold over 25,000 copies. He shared that what started as discussions, blogs and roundtables brought together 7 experts to write this important book. Wealth. Congratulating the authors for achieving the milestone of selling 25,000+ copies, Mr. Baijayant (Jay) Panda, National Vice President, BJP, and former MP (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) said, “Big tech companies today have garnered more power than sovereign nations. It is similar to the Standard Oil Company which had a monopoly in the world oil market and therefore in world politics. He shared instances where countries are trying to curb the power of Big Tech. Four years ago, Mr. Panda introduced the first Bill on Data Protection in Parliament as a Private Member’s Bill. He stressed the need to regulate data collection and security to maintain data sovereignty. “Proprietary and consent to data collection should be regulated, with few exceptions, such as national security,” he said. He shared some of the steps taken in this direction with the Supreme Court judgments and new IT laws, but a lot more needs to be done.

Co-author, Vineet Goenka also compared Big Tech companies with East India Company and said that we are moving towards digital colonization. “Many of these companies are content publishers but disguise themselves as platforms so that they don’t have to take accountability for the content,” he said. Mr. Goenka has filed a petition in the Supreme Court of India seeking a mechanism to stop fake news and inflammatory messages from being circulated through social media, especially Twitter. He advocates the need for indigenous research in the field of data management and promotes indigenous companies to manage Indian data.
Lt Gen DR DB Shekatkar (co-author) said that data security is national security. “The concern is not only personal data protection but equally important is the flow of false data (fake news and fake fiction) coming into the country through social media platforms.” Lt Gen Vinod Khandare (co-author) said that this book is a reflection of his commitment to national security. “Writing the book was an easy task but making governments and people sensitive to data security is a huge challenge.” He said.

Wealth. Bharat Panchal (co-author), Chief Risk Officer, FIS Global, emphasized the need to be self-reliant in data management and control. Lt Gen VM Patil (co-author) shared that most of the hardware products required for data collection and storage are imported into India. “Unless we have our own companies building the hardware and trained data experts, we can never win the race,” he said.

The book discussion was followed by a panel discussion by industry experts to discuss how India can leapfrog in data management. The panelists included Mr. Vinod Kumar, MD, Subex, Mr. Gaurav Tripathi, IITian and Founder Innoplexus and SuperProEye, Mr. Sai Krishna, Former NTRO, IRS, Ms. Lakshmi Madhusudan, Founder of ULBHA, Mr. Rajat Dhar, MD of Finogent.
