The Nobel Prize winners include David Card of the University of California at Berkeley, Joshua De Angrist of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Guido Imbens of Stanford University.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences stated that all three had completely replaced empirical work in the economic sciences. Joshua D. Angrist and Guido W. Imbans have been awarded the prize for their methodological contributions to the analysis of causal relationships in economic science. While David Card has been awarded the prize for his empirical contribution to labor economics.
