Nobel Peace Prize 2021: Philippines journalist Maria Ressa and Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov win Nobel Peace Prize

Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov have been announced the Nobel Peace Prize. He has worked for freedom of expression. These rights are important for any democratic country, which is why Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov have been given this award for protecting these fundamental rights and underlining their importance.

 

Philippine journalist Maria Ressa and Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov have been elected this year for the Nobel Peace Prize. Maria Ressa is a journalist from the Philippines and has used freedom of expression to expose the abuse of power, the use of violence, and growing authoritarianism there. He founded rappler.com in 2012 which acted as a fearless defender of freedom of expression. He worked on the deadly anti-drug campaign.

Dmitry Muratov has been working for freedom of expression in Russia in increasingly challenging circumstances for a long time. In 1993 he joined the founders of the Novaya Gazeta newspaper. Novaya Gazeta set a model in Russian society of fact-based journalism and professional integrity. Since its inception, six of its journalists have been killed.
